The rubber that goes around the outside of the front window frames... What a PITA it is to remove the old dry cracked one! :-x

Got only 4 of the pop out windows taken apart and all those could only "allowed" 2 screws each to get loose. the rest are rusted to the point of fusion.

When removing rubber from the channel use a utility knife and slice it down the middle, then angle the blade under the metal channel on both sides. It slips out in long slivers then.

Into the engine now...

I’m guessing this is a type 3 case and of the fuel infection kind since it doesn’t have provision for a mechanical fuel pump!?! :-k

I had once a ‘70 fuel infection square back which used an electric pump under the tank.

So this is supposed to be a "turn key" motor. Finally got to fire it up yesterday but couldn't get it to idle and was chocking when trying to rev it up!?! Right of the bat I found the plug wires for 1-2 were crossed. The hex bar linkage is offset for "straight" manifolds but the manifolds are ALSO offset making for a YUGE missalignment and thus useless!

That was late yesterday. Being that someone else put this motor together, I am hesitant at taking anything apart. At least though, I can check timing, valve clearance and maybe look into the carburators!?! Well, I just did uncovered the carbs...

Image

WTF???

Hopefully it didn't suck too much paper and being paper should burn/blow through! :-/

Too early this morning to fire it up again but that will give me time to make sure no other forkin surprises are hidden here.

Since I got this motor without firing it up yet and just sitting there, the 3-4 side valve cover was leaking. Knowing this, I went ahead and pulled both covers, check valve clearance and use new gaskets to cap them on. Well, I fired up the motor and here's this:

Image

Image

Ended up digging out some old stock covers and bails to stop the leak. Them forkin 'numilum covers are only good for parts cleaner trays!

So I fired it up again... two very big issues came up. Ignition timing is WAY advanced and for it to barely idle the screws have to be almost all the way in!!! A bonus is an extremely wobbly alternator pulley! :-s

Image
Image

I then check exhaust temperature and found out the motor is running on just the 2 and 4 cylinders. Possibly because the timing is way over 30 degrees off at idle.

Looks like sh!t but it's bone dry now! :-P

Other issues of concern.... For a bus, I'd rather have a stock weight flywheel, not a lightened one.

What's up with the jagged edge on this case?

Image

And just exactly what is up with THIS?

damn at this point I would crack the case and see what else they screwed up on. I would not trust that at all.

That is the wrong thing to do! Anything built by someone else is NOT to be touched when an issue comes up with it! [-X

I am done with it! Right now the only options are: get a turn key motor from a reputable source ($5k plus), get punny motor that came with it checked and reinstalled, get me to build a proper motor for a bus, or buy juan of my 2 motors which are good and ready to go! :???:

I thought it was .... if you don't have the time to do it right the first time where will you find the time to do it over.

Ivan, I do realize you had nothing with that rebuild. That motor reminds me of the POS Bernie Bergman motor I bought.

No, the BB motor blew up way back in the 80s.

I was going to say it isn't that bad. I have put many miles on that motor and now it has a new home in northern cali. Leaking oil up there. lol
