MOFOCO heads have been around for a long time. They've had up'N'downs but seem to have it figured out now. This thread is on a new set being "dyno'd" with results and comments. :-k

I was over at Pyros on Sat. I wanted him to look at my heads and jugs from the motor in my camper.
It has been blowing oil quite bad. We never discussed brand name for heads.
I have one VW head and one Br.
I went home and went on line to look for heads, I found Mofoco heads.
Made in the USA they look really good, but as we know looks can be deceiving.
I have some questions..

I'm not sure what heads I would need, 040 (i have 040 now), 041, 042??
and different set up in each category?
Not sure what "Please specify CC (up to10cc, up to 20cc) in the order notes section during checkout" is?
Also what is "flycutt"?
In your humble opinion, knowing my engine, which head do you believe is best for my set up?

Thx

The 040 should be good enough for your engine. Normally a 55cc chamber is good. I really don't understand what they mean by "10" or "20"!?! Maybe a bigger chamber? :???:

Also, though their base price seems reasonable, I'm not liking their "stainless valves ad $xx." Maybe a check at CB performance is in order. CB also has a new head called "Panchitos" which touts to be a very good "street" head. Need to look at their valve set up and pricing.

The last set I got are 94s but with stock valves.

I did a lot of reading recently on engine gunk when researching my own project 1800 mini stroker and the panchitos sounded like they were the local fave on the Samba.
MOFOCO I would stay away from just from past rep.

Well I am having my heads redone, full valve job by the same company that built the engine 4-5 yrs ago.
The heads looked ok, just need some attention.
They should be ready Fri.
Also just going to hone the cylinders and put on new rings.
I'm saving more than $500. not going all new!!

So one of my heads is cracked, so I need to purchase new heads!

This is for the 1915, stock crank, not sure of the cam.
I have 040 heads, I believe the valves are probably 35-37mm not sure
I will pick them up from the shop tomorrow, so I can measure them then.
I don't know the difference between a 040, 041 and 044 heads
and the different valve sizes.
I did find this on The samba.
stock valves = 1 3/8" header
40X35.5 valves = 1 1/2" header
42X37.5 valves = 1 5/8" header
I believe I have a 1 1/2" header so that does help narrow things down a bit!

I'm really not sure what to get???
I also checked EMPI.?

Here are a few I have found, any suggestions, recommendations etc.

http://www.gex.com/20hd041.htm

GEX #HE 041375C 94 $299.

http://www.cbperformance.com/Panchito-0 ... p/1673.htm

#1673 Panchito 044 $304.

http://www.mofoco.com/category/VW_Performance_Heads/c52

mofoco 040 head complete (not bare) $229. + upgrades

FTR, here's the suggestion I sent you in an email:

Quote:
The gex... Well, it's gex and you should already know what that means!

While I do "like" the looks and the "stated" performance of the mofoco, I have no personal experience with them and it also concerns me their pricing gimmick. "You want this? Then add so much!" :-k

So, gex are cheap but then again, is gex!

The "cheap" mofocos are: $578 for the 040, $598 for the 041 and $699 for the 040 super street. The 040SS is looking good but the 041 which would do good on your engine is a lot cheaper.

Now, with that said, the Panchitos for $610 ready to bolt on sounds to me a much better and secure deal.

The overall difference in price isn't that much and I feel much better with the CB performance proven record than the still in progress development of the mofocos.

Have you decided on the rings yet?

Thanks for the help and much needed recommendation!
I called both Mofoco and CB (Panchito 044) to discuses their heads.
I also am a bit leery with mofoco as no one I know has used them to get a good review.
For my engine CB recommended the Panchito 044 as a good match for the 1915.

Pyro, any recommendation on the rings? Total seal or just a quality set?
I don't want to be a PIYA, I do value your input!

I'm sending my kadron's out to be gone over, I figure why not especially
since one of the cylinders #3, is running quite lean.
Not sure why on the #3 & #4 head there is a major difference,
#4 is black and #3 is light tan!!
They well be out for 3 weeks, sending them today to Kaddie Shack!!

I will order the heads from CB!
and the rings?

THANKS!
.

For rings I like to try these:

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/category-s ... =50&page=4

Quote:

DEVES Piston Rings, 94mm Bore, 1.5mm Top, 2mm Middle, 4mm Oil, Set of 4
Price: $69.95

DEVES Piston Rings, 94mm Bore, 1.5mm Top, 2mm Middle, 4mm Oil, Set of 4 are the finest piston rings you can get for your VW or Porsche Engine! Painstakingly made from the highest quality Swedish Steel, Deves rings break in FAST and DO NOT LEAK! "Deves" is pronounced "Dev-ess", not "Deevz" LOL! This ring set was originally used on Cima 94mm Pistons in the Type 1, 2, and 3 based engines. There are several versions of the 94mm piston rings, you MUST CHECK YOUR RING THICKNESSES VERY CAREFULLY!

We have been selling and using Deves rings for a long time, and feel they are BY FAR THE BEST RINGS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR AIR COOLED ENGINE! Instead of taking 500-1000 miles to break in (blow by, oil usage, overheating, etc), they are often fully broken in after 5-10 MINUTES of run-time on the engine stand or in the garage! If you have ever fought with trying to break in Mahle, Grant, or Total Seal rings, you will REALLY appreciate these, especially if you have ever had to go through the headache of an engine with rings that won't break in properly! This is a set of 12 rings to do one 4 cylinder engine. Note these are available in Standard Bore, as well as .020" (.5mm) and .040" (1mm) over-bores!

If you can swing it, please order a set for me too! I'll give you cash. This ^^^ ones are exactly what I need, top 1.5mm, middle 2.0mm and oil 4.0mm. Measure yours to get the correct ones for your Pistons!
