Loose head? Missing motor bolts? What? What am I missing?

Yes, I see the cooling tin. Like William, I too would forget to install it. #-o

Didn't want to "foul up" the Twin Lakes thread with this, and since I haven't opened it up yet, figured this would be the best place for it. :-k

To recap: the Dormy has been runnig quite well though with some minor non vital issues which can be handled fairly quickly on the spot. Burning oil more often than it should but adding as it goes takes care of that. Also, apparently the "new" phatchick gas tank has some sort of crap in it which builds up on the filter clogging it up every so often. Being the old school glass style, it can easily get taken apart, cleaned up and reinstalled within a few minutes. Had to do it a couple of times on the way up to the Twin Lakes.

So as we were on our way down from camp on the then Hell-ious 395 approaching the Mohave desert and having stopped in Independence to top off the oil, we were moving quite well at a good clip when all of a sudden the Dormy's engine started acting up. It quickly got worse and I guessed it was the fuel filter again. Called on the guys and told them I had to stop and clean it. However, once I did Chris noticed black smoke coming out of the intake vents!!!! I opened the lid and it was really bad, could not see what and/or where the smoke was coming from but it smelled to me like an electrical fire because it smelled like burnt rubber. I quickly undid the battery ground connection and Chris broke out his fire extinguisher and was at the ready but then the smoke started to clear out. To get a better view of the problem I opened up my hack, er, I mean the "access hatch" over the engine. We all looked and tried to find out, guessing what could be. The hole engine and compartment was hotter than hell but finally the last little stream of smoke was trickling out of the right side carburator. I first noticed the nylon on the ny-lock nuts on the carb were melted so I pulled the top cover to see THIS!!!

Image

Then after shining a light into the carb throat I quickly determined that it was done for the trip and an issue that could not be fixed on the side of the road.

I have yet to open it up to even try to find out what caused it to cough up the $hit and nearly burn my Dormy down. So, can you "guess that fault"

I don't have any experience with dual weber carbs, but I'll through out a first guess and say one of the floats got stuck.

Ill also say your lucky it happened in Independence and not a little further down the road in the Mohave desert. You might have passed out from heat exhaustion just waiting for the tow truck.

Agree on the first, some sort of float failure. Though we are both just guessing at it. I will not get into opening it up until AFTER the Dormy is back to DD service. Today, the Plump Truck will be loosing the Dellortos. The dual progressives that were on the Shakalaka will go on it.

On the heat... it was very hot already there, around 104* and we were well past Independence. I left the thermometers in the Dormy while riding with Chris but it did get much hotter. So much so that I kept the window closed since it felt like opening an oven!!!

Hell, when I left Mentone on Sunday at 11:00 am it was already a hundred and it got up to 108* before hitting Temecula!

My true "luck", if you can call it that, is the fact that the carb DID catch on fire but it choke itself out without burning the whole thing up!!!! :smt103

Most definitely will be getting fire extinguishers for all three of my vehicles!!!! 8-[

While I haven't yet find out what happened, there must have been something at issue with the Webers for sure. I say that because yesterday I installed the Dellortos on the Dormy, took it to work today and...

WOW!!!!!!!!

What a huge difference! They are absolutely more responsive than the Webers have been!

They've always were running a bit richer than should but I just have to make slightly smaller jets for them.

Well, the progressives are on the Plump Truck. Will start tearing down the offending Weber today.

Those are the progressives from the shakalaka motor? They worked fabulously for me...AND got good gas mileage.

No. First thought was lack of fuel because of the filter issue but this HAS TO BE a glob of fuel dumped on the #2 port which maybe because it was so freakin hot it just flamed up! :???:

Sorry, I'm late to the party, as usual.

I've got a 40 DCNF 12 7C, 1 each, taking up space in my closet that I'm willing to donate to the cause, if you need it. It was given to me by JJ when I helped him install his new wiring harness before he moved back to Japan. That was, what, 7 years ago? I won't even charge you for storage! Let me know if you want it.
